We often blame a pathogen ie ‘bug - virus or bacteria’ for us being unwell with colds and flu.
Consider that it might not necessarily be the pathogen but our general state of poor health that is the issue and that maybe each year the pathogen usually a ‘virus’ seems 'stronger' because we as a population are actually weaker.
Since having our own chickens, every time I see photos like this I get a little irritated.
The colour of an egg yolk does NOT determine the healthiness of the egg nor the chicken - neither does the shell colour.
People often look shocked when I suggest that white rice is a healthier option than brown rice - and even white (as opposed to bleached) flour therefore white bread and pasta etc...
My usual reasoning in the case of rice is:
An increasing number of people in my life are being diagnosed with cancer.
In nearly every case stressful event/s have preceded the diagnosis.
The microbiome from the Greek words mikrós - small and bíos - life, is an environment consisting of a community of micro organisms existing together. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and yeasts are some of the very many micro organisms living in our gut. They all perform important functions to ensure our body is functioning optimally. We have microbiomes in various parts of our bodies including nasal passages, in our skin folds like armpits and groin, in genital areas and in our large intestine or gut. The gut one is the microbiome most determinate of our overall health.
Each of these microbiomes have their own ideal balance of micro organisms and when in balance all is well for the larger organism ie the human body. Problems arise when these micro organisms are either out of balance of find themselves in microbiomes not native to them.
There are many approaches to supporting gut health. We all want a quick fix, especially when living with uncomfortable symptoms. A lot of people go in all guns blazing, hitting their fragile digestive system with copious amounts of ‘healing’ food and supplements, more often than not this approach tends to do more harm than good. After 2 decades of working in this field, my experience has shown me that a slow, measured approach focusing on inclusion more so than elimination, tends to be more effective and sustainable.
Nearly every day I see examples of just how destructive our current day ‘nutrition wars’ are on our physical, emotional and mental health.
People frozen in confusion and fear in supermarket aisles, farmers markets and their own kitchens as to the ‘right’ food to buy and cook has become a very real thing.
It is completely absurd and completely understandable.
Each way you turn you have someone telling you:
‘eat this’, ‘no don’t eat that, eat this’,
‘that food causes cancer’, ‘actually that food protects you from cancer’,
‘this food has magical superfood powers’, ‘no that superfood is actually toxic’…
Who do you believe?
Obviously in a profession like mine people often tell me about how healthily they eat and nearly always it will be something like ‘oh I mainly eat chicken and fish. I hardly ever eat red meat’
Ahhrrrg
Worse still they only eat chicken breast, in my opinion, the least nutritious part of the chicken (the least tastiest too, again in my opinion).
I'm going to deal with chicken today and share about fish in another post.
This chicken, particular certain cuts, being a healthy choice is really quite new (I am not saying that it’s unhealthy) and our favouring of the skinless, boneless breast came hand in hand with the whole low-fat disaster.
Once a month we have an interfaith gathering in our local area and ours occurred last night.
The theme was transformation and was centered around the quote 'change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.'
Toward the end of my sharing last night I warned that while transformation can be joyful and bring us much freedom, it can also bring us some pain. Often our changing doesn't sit well with others.
Being a practitioner who looks to food before supplements, it is very common, in my treatment plan following a consultation, for me to suggest including bitter foods and drinks into the diet especially when the complaint is around digestion, or liver related like reproductive and skin issues – that pretty much covers almost everyone these days...
I am constantly in awe at how people generations before us, without all the science, technology and research grants we have today, just knew the most nourishing parts of animals and plants and about food preparation to increase nutrient density and digestibility or decrease toxicity.
So yesterday I got food poisoning. This is a rare occurrence for me. I can count on one hand the times I have had it in my nearly 53 years. I share this ‘news’ with you because it allows me to share with you yet again the importance of optimal digestive health.
We often blame a virus for us being unwell with colds and flu in winter.
Consider that it might not necessarily be the virus…
Besides the benefits to the health of ourselves, animals and the planet, doing so would help ensure that we continued to have Australian grown food and not be dependent on other countries, especially if SOMETHING should happen that prevented us from importing food...
Well SOMETHING has happened folks!
It’s about being peaceful. It’s noticing when I’ve gone into fear and asking myself how the fear, or whatever uncomfortable feeling I am having, is serving me in this moment and making the choice to replace it with a neutral or more comfortable feeling.
For some this is all a new concept, for most ‘how’ is a common question - how do you do post partum care?
No wonder more connected generations before us paid so much attention to nourishing and nurturing the pregnant woman and more so the post partum woman, insisting on a good whole month at a minimum to completely rest and recover to some degree. Another example of traditional wisdom getting it so right without all the science and technology we have available to us today.
While obviously nothing was keeping me away from the most precious milestone of the birth of my grandchild - my daughter living on the other side of the world, was only one of some significant challenges - there was more than just the maternal desire and joy to be present. For me (and fortunately my daughter) there is an innate responsibility passed down through generations of women, though sadly these days neglected to our societal and personal detriment.
It seems sharing about the process of hormesis is coming up frequently in consultations recently
Have you heard of hormesis?
Hormesis is the process of stressing the body to a degree to strengthen or produce positive benefits.
Now you will have heard me frequently emphasise the deleterious effects of stress to our overall health. In fact I believe stress is the main contributor to much of our poor health today. However
Be still my beating heart.
Out of something worrisome came something very hopeful. My Dad has been increasingly unwell and today we had to call for a doctor to visit Dad at home. The doctor ordered some potent antibiotics for Dad and then said - are you ready for this? - he then said
The topic of lunchbox ideas for me is one of the most frustrating.
It comes amidst parents lamenting they feel like they spend all their time in the kitchen, parents who are exhausted, parents who selfishly put their own self care at the bottom of their ‘to do’ list, parents who spend enough time on social media to have themselves feeling less than in nearly every area of their lives, parents who slavishly and unconsciously follow food/nutrition trends…
Today I’m preparing for a talk I've been asked to share on feeding children from baby's first foods onward.
So many parents are filled with angst that their toddlers don't eat enough or any vegetables so whenever I show this slide there is a simultaneous sigh of disbelief and relief.
Obviously there is much discussion and explanation that follows and in the days and weeks after the talk I receive much feedback about how relaxed meal times have become.
So easy. So delicious. So economical. Whether you need or choose to eat dairy free or not, ghee is a yummy alternative to butter and as always, you can’t beat homemade.
It’s that time of year where crazy detox protocols seem to be everywhere –
Not. A. Fan.
Ok so maybe you overdid the food and/or alcohol over the Holyday and New Year period and now you’re feeling sluggish and blah. Well your body is already struggling and under stress so why stress it more with a punishing/ restrictive detox protocol?
After noticing a spate of posts in my newsfeed on various neighbourhood, ecourse, community support, mothers and even financial advice groups as well as health related groups, for requests for random recommendations of probiotics for everything from finger infections, to frequent colds, to digestive disorders, period pain and migraines, I went searching for this post I had written previously and realised I've yanked it out of the archives a number of times - throwing it out there again for what it's worth, though not sure if anyone is really taking any notice...
As many of you know, I prioritise knowing about the food I eat – the where, who and how the food was raised and/or prepared. This isn’t always as easy as it once was and I believe, should be.
Salmon is a case in point. So many people in Australia consume salmon regularly believing it to be a healthy food to eat. I used to do that too until I discovered that all fresh salmon in Australia is farmed and, from what I have been able to ascertain, the way salmon is farmed in Australia has me saying ‘no thanks’. Concerns around animal and thus human health in addition to environmental damage are the issues for me.
We often blame a virus for us being unwell with colds and flu in winter.
Consider that it might not necessarily be the virus but our general state of poor health that is the issue and that maybe each year the virus seems 'stronger' because we as a population are actually weaker. In clinical practice it does appear that people are on the whole mentally, emotionally and physically unhealthier these days, possibly than ever before.
Many people find they can eat a certain food without issue and then they can’t…. Seemingly all of a sudden a food they ate with no issue in the past now causes some form of discomfort; bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, joint pain, skin problems, fatigue etc There could be a number of reasons to develop a sensitivity to a particular food.
The ‘bucket theory’ could be one reason.
For many months now it has become more and more common to have young Mum’s either during a talk or consultation, comment on how they feel inadequate and are letting their families down because while the meals they serve their family are delicious and healthy, they aren’t gorgeously plated up like the meals they see on social media. Many are in tears.

There has been a huge increase in the popularity of cold therapy; plunges and ice baths. As is usually the case, the popularity goes hand in hand with some health professionals and social media influences claiming it a cure for EVERYBODY after all it can’t hurt… well actually for some people it can…
